Hi! My name is Ernest Yap!

The Purpose:

I find that teaching and sharing knowledge with others provides me with the most joy and personal fulfillment.

GeoErnest.com aims to provide geospatial education to help people succeed.

I wish GeoErnest.com to be a public platform to discuss mapping technologies and best practices.

Technology ADVANCES, and I am fortunate to be at the forefront of some of it! I hope to introduce you to what is NEW, and how it can HELP us all!

I want to share my knowledge of the following:

  • direct georeferencing
  • aided-inertial navigation
  • camera technologies
  • map production workflows (Aerial-Triangulation, DSM generation, Ortho-generation)
  • air and land-mobile mapping
  • UVs (unmanned vehicles)

You may find it difficult to get resources about these topics in layman terms. So I hope I can help you out!

My background:

I graduated from the University of Calgary in Geomatics Engineering. My interests were in airborne mapping, GIS, and GNSS technologies.

I spent a few years travelling around the world as a customer support engineer (EIT), training people on using aided-inertial systems, mapping sensors (cameras, LIDARs, SAR, etc…), completing installations, and most importantly, solving technical problems. I enjoyed sharing the use of new technologies with the people who just acquired them.

I moved into a sales role in 2006 to challenge myself since it was completely out of my comfort zone. Now, I am learning every day by listening to what people want, what they want to achieve, and the challenges they face. If I can, I provide them with ideas, tools and processes to help them achieve their goals!

Recently, I have learnt that for me to be happiest and most comfortable, I need to be a teacher first because it feels so right for me. I just happen to be in sales.

Where do I work?

I am officially an account manager for a certain company that manufactures aerial mapping cameras and laser scanning systems, land-mobile mapping systems, associated aerial and land mapping software, object-based classification software, and aided-inertial navigation systems for direct georeferencing.

This company is known for making land-survey equipment, its diversity of divisions, and it is headquartered in Sunnyvale, California. Have you figured it out yet?

What’s the deal with my picture?

Yes, the picture is pretty snazzy, and I like it. This one is from my wedding pictures, and I found another use out of them!

      I get some suits from Harry Rosen in Canada, but I’m going to try a Canadian designer named, Christopher Bates at “ChristopherBates.com” next.
